News, Updates, Everything We Know

And Just Like That’s season 1 finale hints there’s still more story to tell for SATC’s characters – here’s everything we know about season 2.

Warning: SPOILERS ahead for And Just Like That‘s finale!

The first season of Sex and the City’s revival has come to an end, so here’s everything we know about And Just Like That season 2. One of HBO Max’s first original series, And Just Like That follows Sex and the City’s main characters a decade after the sequel films, with the women now exploring life in New York City as married 50-somethings rather than singles in their 30s. And Just Like That’s 10-episode season 1 brought back Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie, Cynthia Nixon as Miranda, and Kristin Davis as Charlotte, with Kim Cattrall choosing not to return as Samantha Jones.

And Just Like That attempted to fix many of the original series’ shortcomings, including Sex and the City’s notable lack of diversity. With plenty of new characters joining the fray, And Just Like That’s story wasn’t just focused on the love lives and friendships of Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte. With all of the changes to Sex and the City’s formula, And Just Like That also grew to have a very different tone from the original, especially since episode 1 ended with the death of Carrie’s husband Mr. Big. The rest of season 1 followed Carrie’s grief, the somewhat inevitable though ultimately for-the-best failure of Miranda and Steve’s relationship, and Charlotte supporting her children in their own self-discoveries.

The finale of And Just Like That season 1 seems to set up a future for the series, with Carrie beginning her own “Sex and the City” podcast as she returns to dating, Miranda going to LA with her significant other Che, and Charlotte getting “they”mitvahed after converting to Judaism in the original series. The finale also saw Carrie and Samantha’s feud come to an end, with the two getting drinks together off-screen in Paris. With Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte likely to return for another chapter, here’s a breakdown of everything we know about And Just Like That season 2, including a possible release date and story.

And Just Like That Season 2 Is Happening!

Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw in And Just Like That

HBO Max took its time officially renewing And Just Like That, but the comments from the returning Sex and the City cast, showrunner Michael Patrick King, and HBO Max representatives left little room for doubt that it would happen eventually. Now, And Just Like That season 2 has officially been greenlit, following the show’s huge success for HBO Max. And Just Like That’s finale left off ambiguously for Miranda as well as setting up a familiar lifestyle for Carrie, so the story itself clearly wasn’t over, either, and a follow-up can tie up all of the loose ends. According to Variety, HBO Max’s chief content officer revealed that And Just Like That is the streaming service’s most popular original show to date, so it’s no surprise that the service officially renewed it for season 2 on March 22, 2022. Sarah Jessica Parker explained that right after And Just Like That season 1 wrapped, she was excited to discuss moving forward with season 2, confirming in effect what HBO Max would later make official with the And Just Like That season 2 renewal announcement.

When And Just Like That Season 2’s Release Date Could Be

And Just Like That season 1 was officially ordered as an HBO Max original series in January 2021, with the release date of episode 1 of the series in early December 2021. If the schedules of And Just Like That’s cast don’t conflict too much, it seems audiences can expect a little under a year after the announcement for season 2’s release date. If HBO Max had renewed the series in February, And Just Like That season 2’s release date would be shaping up to be in late Fall 2022 or Winter 2023, but given the slight delay, Winter 2023 may be more likely.

What And Just Like That Season 2’s Story Could Be About

Following And Just Like That‘s season 1 ending, season 2 will likely see Carrie fully returning to her old SATC character by optimistically diving back into dating life, as hinted at by her third date with Peter and closing makeout session with her podcast producer. She’s also starting a podcast called “Sex and the City” where she gives advice to callers, thus getting back to the original show’s formula. And Just Like That season 2 would also reasonably explore Miranda returning from LA after Che’s TV show pilot, as well as Charlotte continuing to explore her children’s changing lives as teenagers.

Samantha Will Not Return For And Just Like That Season 2

Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw + Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones in Sex and the City 2 Entry 6

One thing that will almost certainly stay the same for And Just Like That season 2 is Kim Cattrall’s absence as Samantha Jones. Sarah Jessica Parker was asked about the possibility of an And Just Like That season 2 Cattrall return, but said that given the “public history” of Cattrall’s generally negative feelings towards Sex and the City, she can’t really imagine it going well. Even though Samantha brought a much-needed dynamism and open-mindedness to the original Sex and the City series and could probably add similar spice to And Just Like That, it seems that personal tensions are too strong among the cast for it to actually work out. And Just Like That has been able to work Samantha into the story anyway through offscreen interactions, so it’s possible that the series will continue to do so in season 2.
