Encanto Wins Favorite Animated Movie at Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards

At the 2022 Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards, the immensely successful Disney animated film Encanto wins one of the night’s biggest prizes.

Disney’s Encanto wins the award for Favorite Animated Movie at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. Encanto is set in a small fictionalized town in Columbia and centers on the magical Madrigal family. Mirabel Madrigal is the only member of the family without a magical gift, but when a mysterious force begins to fracture the family’s magic and legacy, she ventures to uncover the source of the threat and save the Madrigals.

Encanto opened in theatres in November of 2021, with a subsequent thirty day theater run followed by the film’s release on Disney’s streaming platform, Disney+.  The musical animated film features songs by the legendary Lin-Manuel Miranda of Hamilton and Moana fame and garnered incredible reception both critical and commercial, with the film and in particular the song “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” achieving viral status over the 2021 holiday season. Encanto‘s continued success throughout the 2022 award-season led for a re-release of the film in theaters in February 2022.

At 2022’s Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards held on the evening of April 9th, Encanto nabbed the award show’s prize for Favorite Animated Movie. Given the continually astonishing success of the film, the choice is hardly surprising. The award, while exciting in its own right, joins a lengthy list of awards the impressive film already flaunts.

Both the Golden Globe Awards and the Academy Awards acknowledged Encanto‘s extraordinary artistic merit with awards in their respective Best Animated Feature categories. The Nickolodean Kids Choice award, however, illustrates pure audience adoration of the film, since most of the awards of the night are based on votes from viewers easily accessed from the show’s website. The continual praise showered on Encanto illustrates the massive widespread appeal for the film’s themes of cultural diversity, family, and healing of generational trauma, rendered in a stunning magic-realist narrative and visual style.

Encanto also signifies an important surge in entertainment that centers around Latinx/Afro-Latinx characters who have been historically marginalized in their representation. Therefore, the success of the film creates a notable milestone for the continual fight for more diversity in Hollywood. Its own cultural significance renders the awards it received especially important and hopefully inspires Disney to continue its creation of these culturally diverse, inclusive stories like Encanto.
