Nagini has been left out of Fantastic Beasts 3, but this makes sense with an already crowded cast. Future films may see the maledictus make a return.
After the release of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, Wizarding World enthusiasts have been left wondering why Nagini isn’t in the movie and how she might come back. Nagini is unique in that she’s one of the only characters from the Fantastic Beasts franchise also to be featured in the Harry Potter movies. Not only was her introduction in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald memorable, but it piqued audiences’ collective interest to see how a kind young woman would eventually become one of the fiercest villains in Harry Potter lore. Despite that, her absence likely has its logical reasons and may even lead to Nagini having a larger role in future Fantastic Beasts films, despite her lack of presence in Fantastic Beasts 3.
The Crimes of Grindelwald introduced the human form of the future snake friend and horcrux of Voldemort, Nagini (Claudia Kim), as a young maledictus not yet succumbed to her blood curse. At the end of the film, she saw her companion, Credence Barebone (Ezra Miller), join Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp). At the same time, she narrowly escaped death and joined Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) and Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) on their journey back to Hogwarts. Though fans of the franchise know her story is far from over, The Secrets of Dumbledore snubbed her character in totality, essentially erasing her from the storyline. So the question remains as to why she was left out and whether or not she’ll be seen in future installments. That is, if Fantastic Beasts 4 happens.
Nagini’s introduction in Fantastic Beasts 2 was remarkable in that it was kept secret almost until the release of the film, and Harry Potter aficionados were happy to see the origin story of an already-established character about which not much was known. However, Nagini had little to do in the movie, leading to some disappointment that she received so little attention. When The Secrets of Dumbledore came out, her nonexistent presence was dually noted, and many were unhappy about the change. Here’s why Nagini wasn’t in Fantastic Beasts 3 and how she could come back.
Nagini’s Future After The Fantastic Beasts Movies
Between Fantastic Beasts 3 and the primary Harry Potter timeline, Nagini transforms from human to snake, but not much is known about when Nagini makes the permanent change and how her Maledictus curse takes over, erasing her human form forever. From that point on, she goes to the forests of Albania, presumably to live out the rest of her life as a gargantuan creature, perpetually bound in her scaly form. While in Albania, she’s confronted by Voldemort and becomes his most loyal servant. No one knows what Voldemort must’ve said to convince her to join his side, as she was against Grindelwald’s cause in Fantastic Beasts 2 and has no presence in Fantastic Beasts 3. Her and Voldemort’s bond is only strengthened when she becomes a Horcrux for him.
Nagini became a Horcrux in 1994, during Goblet of Fire when Voldemort kills a particularly chatty Ministry worker named Bertha Jorkins. This plotline isn’t explored in the Harry Potter movies but plays a significant role in the books. Nagini became particularly close to Voldemort, sticking by his side through thick and thin. She became most heavily involved in Voldemort’s murderous plots during The Deathly Hallows when she transformed into Magical Historian Bathilda Bagshot and lured Harry and Hermione into her lair. In the movies, Nagini was the one who killed Snape in the boathouse. The Maledictus meets her end when Neville Longbottom finds Gryffindor’s sword and, in an attempt to destroy the final Horcrux, cuts off her head.
Nagini’s Origin Story Deserves Its Own Movie
In a way, Fantastic Beasts failed Nagini by not continuing her origin story, and her transformation and origin warrant closer attention in their own movie. One of the series’s strongest bullets in its arsenal is its connection to Harry Potter. Essentially, Nagini showed up in Fantastic Beasts 2, shocked the world with her origin story, then was never seen again. There’s much more of the Maledictus’ story that could be told, which means she deserves her own origin movie. The movie could tie up some loose ends for the character, such as when she became a snake for good or how she became involved with Voldemort in the first place. While it’s well known that she became inseparable from her master because of her Horcrux status, there’s still a lot in that relationship that could be explored.
The Secrets of Dumbledore delved into Dumbledore’s backstory and mysterious past, and his current conflicts with Grindelwald and his brother Aberforth. The politics of the Wizarding World is a major focus, as Grindelwald tries to get elected to lead the Wizarding World after being pardoned for his crimes. Another highlight of the film is the formation of Dumbledore’s first army led by brothers Newt and Theseus Scamander. The inclusion of Nagini’s story, a former circus performer who eventually succumbs to her Maledictus curse and aligns with the evil Voldemort, would seem out of place in a story about wizard rivalries and global politics.
Future Fantastic Beasts films, however, would do well to return her character to the franchise as she is both a “fantastic beast” of sorts and a connection to the Harry Potter films. It is also very likely the introduction of a young Tom Riddle will occur before the Fantastic Beasts movies come to a close. Having Nagini, who has so far been a benevolent character, involved in the story could add more nuance to the origins of the villainous Voldemort. While current lore suggests Nagini joins Voldemort’s nefarious efforts after being defeated at Godric’s Hollow, she could become a part of his life while he is a young boy. The film could show how and when Nagini transforms into her snake form permanently, and since Tom is a Parselmouth, having Nagini as a friend early on would be quite fitting.
The Fantastic Beasts’ inclusion of Nagini in The Crimes of Grindelwald has been an exciting element of the franchise, and seeing the future reptilian foe of Harry Potter as an initially sweet young woman has only created more interest in the character. While it’s understandable Nagini has been left out of Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore, there is plenty of stories left to tell regarding Voldemort’s most beloved Horcrux. But her origins may never come to light, given the third Fantastic Beasts movie’s mixed reception.
