What’s Going To Happen To Enzo In Stranger Things 4?

Stranger Things season 4’s new character Dmitri Antonov, AKA “Enzo,” may have survived through volume 1, but his future in the series is less clear.

Warning! SPOILERS for Stranger Things season 4, volume 1.

Stranger Things season 4’s new character, “Enzo,” aka Dmitri Antonov, has survived the Russian prison’s Demogorgon pit, but his fate in volume 2 is more ambiguous. Alongside the returns of many old Stranger Things characters (like Dr. Brenner), season 4 has introduced plenty of new figures in the battle against the Upside Down. While some new characters like Stranger Things Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn) seem safe, others like Enzo aren’t guaranteed to survive through the end of Stranger Things season 4.

Hopper’s Russia storyline in Stranger Things season 4, volume 1 sees him primarily associated with Russian prison guard Dmitri Antonov (Tom Wlaschiha, better known as Jaqen H’ghar in Game of Thrones), who goes by the code name “Enzo,” after the restaurant where Joyce and Hopper were set to have a date. While Enzo starts out as a sly guard who is helping Hopper escape prison in exchange for $40,000, the new Stranger Things character ends up sitting in a jail cell himself when their plan is foiled. The end of Stranger Things season 4, volume 1 saw Dmitri and Hopper as the only two survivors in the Russian prison’s Demogorgon pit, whereafter the duo reunited with Joyce and Murray.

Since Yuri’s plane crash-landed on the way to the prison, the next step for Hopper, Joyce, and Murray to leave Russia is less clear. Not only do they still have to make their way out of the Russian prison’s boundaries, but they also have one more man to smuggle on their way out: Dmitri. While Enzo’s motives were questionable at the start of Stranger Things season 4, he and Hopper formed a close bond during their captivity, which saw both men confide in one another about their struggles with parenting. Hopper’s main goal in escaping is to help save Eleven again, even if that’s the last thing he does. Enzo, on the other hand, is now focused on making sure his son, Mikhail, doesn’t think he’s a traitor to his country. Since escaping Russian prison with three Americans would inevitably increase his status as a traitor, Dmitri has a massive dilemma moving into Stranger Things season 4, volume 2. Does he escape and leave his son thinking he’s gone over to the enemy, or does he stay and immediately meet his own death?

Why Enzo Likely Dies In Stranger Things 4, Volume 2

Hopper and Dmitri talking in a Russian prison on Stranger Things

When Stranger Things quickly fleshes out a new recurring character in a sympathetic light, it almost always signals that death is imminent. Bob became a fan-favorite character in Stranger Things season 2 before dying on a mission to save Will. Alexei, who, like Dmitri, was a Russian labeled as a traitor who once allied with Joyce, Murray, and Hopper, became one of the most heartbreaking deaths in Stranger Things season 3. If Enzo successfully escapes the Russian prison, his fate appears to be sealed either way. He either returns home to Mikhail and explains the truth and is killed by the Russians, remains in prison where he’ll be killed by the guards, or escapes to America and is deemed a traitor in the eyes of his son.

Stranger Things season 4, volume 1 has so far only seen the deaths of four characters (not including Hawkins Lab massacre flashbacks): Chrissy, Fred, Patrick, and “Unknown Hero Agent Man.” While Chrissy received a significant storyline in Stranger Things season 4’s premiere, the rest of the deaths were by characters who received only a few scenes’ worth of attention. As such, it seems the next death in Stranger Things season 4, volume 2 will be a character whose motivations, fears, and backstory have already been fleshed out. Since Stranger Things‘ Eddie and Argyle aren’t likely to die, this leaves the most emotional death for Stranger Things season 4’s new characters to be that of Dmitri, aka Enzo.
