Is Grace’s Death In Manifest S3’s Finale Cal’s Fault? It’s Complicated

Some have laid the blame for Grace Stone’s death in the Manifest season 3 finale at the feet of Cal. But is the murder really her son’s fault?

It’s been suggested that the blame for Angelina murdering Grace in Manifest should go to Cal. In the season 3 finale, the series delivered its biggest death ever when it killed off Athena Karkanis’ character. After trying in vain to stop Angelina from kidnapping her daughter, Grace received a fatal knife wound offscreen.

What happened to Grace in the episode partially laid the groundwork for Manifest’s fourth and final season. Not only did Angelina cement her status as a villain, but she just made Ben Stone a widower and robbed two major characters of their mother. Obviously, the fate she suffered in the finale will have massive ramifications for what comes next for several of the show’s key players. Even though Manifest season 4 is confirmed to pick up two years after the finale, Grace’s death is sure to cast a shadow on the core cast, who could be reeling from what transpired that day for quite some time. Making sure Angelina is held accountable for her actions may be one of the Flight 828 passengers’ goals when Manifest season 4 part 1 premieres on Netflix.

After Manifest killed off Grace, there’s been some talk of whether or not Cal helped make his mother’s death possible. Sadly enough, the circumstances of her death do indicate that Cal’s actions set it in motion. After all, it was he who told her where the extra key was to his family’s home, thus enabling her to get inside and surprise Grace. It’s possible that she could have broken in anyway without the key, but Cal’s decision definitively made Angelina completing her plan much easier. All of this was made worse by the fact that Angelina’s behavior gave Cal good reasons not to trust her. But while Cal is certainly at fault on some level, he’s not the only one who deserves to be blamed for it. It shouldn’t be forgotten that it was Adrian who encouraged Angelina to go find her “guardian angel”.

Why Cal May Have Foreseen Grace’s Death

Furthering complicating the issue of Cal’s role in Grace’s death is the implication that his deep connection to the Callings may have tipped him off about Grace’s death before it happened. While it’s hard to imagine Cal giving Angelina the key whilst knowing what she was going to do, it is possible that he figured it out sometime after that. Cal was noticeably emotional with Grace (but not with Ben) before he disappeared, which strengthens the possibility that at some point before she was stabbed by Angelina, he may have received a Calling that foretold her death. There’s also the matter of how he re-entered the picture during Grace’s final scene. When he came back five years older, he seemed to show up at just the right time and place, as if he had some knowledge of when his mother was going to die.

Manifest season 4 kicking off two years later aside, there’s no doubt that the many questions surrounding who’s to blame for Grace’s murder will be relevant to the episodes to come. Whatever guilt that Cal (and Adrian) may experience in the aftermath of what Angelina did could have a profound impact on their characters and stories when the show comes back. And if it’s true that Cal had any prior knowledge of Grace’s fate, that could troubling revelation for Ben as he struggles to get his family through this tragedy.
