Piccolo hypes up Gohan’s latent power in the English dub trailer for Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. Creator Akira Toriyama’s beloved franchise, Dragon Ball, has enjoyed a pop culture resurgence with the Dragon Ball Super anime and the ongoing manga, which takes place after Dragon Ball Z’s Buu saga. After the Tournament of Power, Super’s anime continued with the release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly in 2018. The upcoming follow-up film, Super Hero, arrived in Japanese theaters on April 22 and will release stateside on August 19.
Super Hero’s story takes place a few years after Broly and concurrently with the manga. The film features the return of the Red Ribbon Army—the organization Goku all but defeated in the original Dragon Ball before the appearance of Dr. Gero, Androids 16, 17, 18, 19, and Cell in Dragon Ball Z. With Goku and Vegeta on Beerus’ planet, Super Hero focuses on Gohan and Piccolo as they combat the Red Ribbon Army’s latest androids, Gamma 1 and Gamma 2 (alongside a surprisingly familiar enemy). Now, a trailer for Super Hero’s English dub has been released.
During the Shonen movie panel at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Toei Animation and Crunchyroll dropped the new English trailer for Super Hero ahead of its August release. In addition to giving a look at Saiyans Goku, Vegeta, Gohan, Broly, and the androids, the trailer ends with Piccolo actor Christopher Sabat (who also voices Vegeta) telling Gohan, “You have the potential to become the most powerful being on Earth.” Check it out below:

The above trailer offers a look at the explosive action that has made the franchise so successful, with a new animation style that has shifted away from the traditional 2D art in favor of 3D—which has proven divisive among Dragon Ball fans. What isn’t divisive is the decision to focus on one of the series’ most beloved surrogate father/son relationships in Piccolo and Gohan. While the latter character was once the strongest Z fighter in Dragon Ball Z, Goku’s son has largely fallen off since. Near the end of Super, Gohan finally regained his Ultimate/Mystic form before vowing to achieve a new form that no Saiyan has ever achieved.
Super Hero’s trailer also shows Gohan wearing Piccolo’s Namekian garb. The film is poised to make Gohan and Piccolo’s power levels comparable to Goku—something that has been confirmed by Dragon Ball Super’s creator. Gohan’s latent potential has always been teased and Piccolo respected, but the pair have been sidelined in favor of Goku and Vegeta throughout Super’s run. While the Super anime likely follows the ongoing manga series (if it returns), Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero bodes well for the future of characters besides Kakarot and the Saiyan Prince.
