Scott Lang’s third solo movie kicks off Phase 5. Here’s everything you need to know about Ant-Man 3 and what to expect from it.
Marvel heroes who have gotten solo movies in the Marvel Cinematic Universe have had at least three, and Paul Rudd’s Scott Lang is no different – so what’s known about Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania? The MCU as the world now knows it began in 2008 with Jon Favreau’s Iron Man, which set the basis for the tone of the movies that followed and prepared the ground for the arrival of the Avengers. As the MCU progressed, more characters from Marvel Comics got their big-screen debut, among those Scott Lang a.k.a. Ant-Man.
After a couple of obstacles in pre-production, with director Edgar Wright leaving the project and Peyton Reed taking the lead, Ant-Man was released in 2015. The movie followed Scott Lang, a master thief who ended up taking part in the experiments of Dr. Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) involving a super-suit that allows him to shrink in scale but increase in strength. Ant-Man was praised for its sense of humor and got a sequel in 2018, titled Ant-Man and the Wasp, with Evangeline Lilly reprising her role as Hope van Dyne a.k.a. Wasp.
Though Ant-Man and the Wasp was well-received by critics and viewers, Marvel has dedicated serious time to its third Ant-Man film, which ended up being left out of the MCU’s Phase 4. Thankfully, Ant-Man 3 will now serve as the opening movie for MCU Phase 5, closely followed by the Disney+ show Secret Invasion and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Here’s everything that’s known so far about Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and what to expect from it.
Ant-Man 3 Release Date
Ant-Man 3 will be the first movie to come out of the MCU Phase 5, and its scheduled release date is February 17th, 2023. As Phases 4, 5, and 6 are now dubbed “The Multiverse Saga” and have Kang the Conqueror at their core, Quantumania has taken on increased importance in the slate. The release of the film was kept largely under wraps for quite a long time, with many believing that the third installment would be a part of the MCU’s problematic Phase 4. However, the Phase 4 release slate came and went, and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania wasn’t a part of the picture. Its increased magnitude in the Multiverse Saga is the likely reason for Ant-Man 3‘s position leading the charge for Phase 5.
Ant-Man 3 Cast
The main characters of the Ant-Man franchise will be returning to reprise their roles. Paul Rudd (Scott Lang), Evangeline Lilly (Hope van Dyne), Michael Douglas (Hank Pym), Michelle Pfieffer (Janet van Dyne), and Kathryn Newton (Cassie Lang) are all going to be a part of Ant-Man 3. The new movie will also involve the feature-movie debut of Kang the Conqueror, a time-traveling multiversal adversary first seen as the One Who Remains in Loki who will be played by Lovecraft Country‘s Jonathan Majors. Bill Murray also joins the cast in an undisclosed role. In addition, the mutated, powerful, bulbous-headed Marvel mainstay MODOK will be in Ant-Man 3.
Ant-Man 3 Story Details
The MCU hasn’t really explored the Quantum Realm, so Ant-Man 3 will be a good opportunity to do so, especially after Janet’s return from the Realm and Lang’s five-year stint there following Thanos’ snap in Avengers: Infinity War. The trailer footage shown at San Diego Comic-Con 2022 for Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania demonstrated that Ant-Man, the Wasp, and Hope’s parents will explore the Quantum Realm, looking to save Cassie after she accidentally gets sucked in. The team will have to handle at least one Kang the Conqueror variant on their journey – which could end very badly indeed – and if the psychic MODOK plays a major antagonist role, the stakes are definitely high. The latest news also reports that Cassie may take on the role of Stinger or Stature in the upcoming Marvel film.
