Maverick BTS Photos Show New Characters Bonding On Set

Behind-the-scenes images of the new characters from Top Gun: Maverick show the cast members’ bonds were just as strong off-screen as they were on it.

Behind-the-scenes photos from the set of Top Gun: Maverick show the new cast members training and bonding together. Coming 36 years after the release of the original film, Top Gun: Maverick sees the return of Tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. The film has been a major hit with both audiences and critics and continues to break records at the box office. While the Top Gun sequel brings back several familiar faces, including Val Kilmer’s Iceman, the film also introduces a host of new characters.

Top Gun: Maverick puts Cruise’s character into a leadership role this time around, training an elite group of Top Gun graduates for a dangerous mission over enemy territory. Among them is Miles Teller’s Rooster, the son of Anthony Edwards’ Goose from the original film. Although the friction and eventual camaraderie between Maverick and Rooster is a major focus of the film, the other young pilots also play an important role. In addition to Teller, Top Gun: Maverick introduces new characters in the form of Monica Barbaro’s Phoenix, Jay Ellis’ Payback, Lewis Pullman’s Bob, Glen Powell’s Hangman, Danny Ramirez’s Fanboy, and Greg Tarzan Davis’ Coyote.

The images show the actors preparing for what appears to be a training exercise, hanging out during a meeting, and posing with co-writer Christopher McQuarrie. In an effort to make Top Gun: Maverick as thrilling as possible for audiences, much of the action was captured practically with Cruise and the other actors sent up in real fighter jets. The cast underwent what has since been dubbed “Tom Cruise Boot Camp” to prepare for their roles, experiences that have evidently created strong bonds between the various cast members. Since many of the characters are forced to rely on each other in the film, particularly during its action-packed conclusion, it’s fitting that the dynamic between the actors appears to have been just as friendly and supportive off-screen.

While Cruise’s Maverick and Teller’s Rooster carry much of the action in Top Gun: Maverick, the new characters were also a major highlight. It remains to be seen whether a third Top Gun film will ever come to fruition, but Teller has previously revealed that he’s already had talks with Cruise about it. The new characters in Top Gun: Maverick have proved popular enough that, even without Cruise, a third film could work. After all, the behind-the-scenes pictures show that they clearly had a good time working together.
