The MCU Phase 4 series I Am Groot, a collection of shorts focusing on the titular Guardians of the Galaxy character, releases on Disney+ on August 10.
I Am Groot will release on Disney+ on August 10, but subscribers may wonder what time exactly they can begin watching the new Marvel show. I Am Groot is a collection of animated shorts centered around the Guardians of the Galaxy character Baby Groot (Vin Diesel), who is best known for his limited language, speaking the words “I am Groot” in different tones and inflections. Each short episode of I Am Groot will follow Baby Groot as he traverses the galaxy and gets into trouble with familiar friends – such as Rocket (Bradley Cooper) – and various new characters he meets along the way.
Despite having helmed the Guardians of the Galaxy movie trilogy and the upcoming holiday special, James Gunn is not directing I Am Groot. Instead, the Disney+ series comes from animator and director Kristen Lepore (Marcel the Shell with Shoes On), marking her debut in the MCU. I Am Groot joins the vast slate of MCU Phase 4 series created for Disney+, with the beloved tree-like character’s new show following WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, What If…?, Hawkeye, Moon Knight, and Ms. Marvel.
What Time I Am Groot Releases On Disney+
I Am Groot arrives just one week before the highly anticipated Disney+ MCU series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. However, there won’t be any significant viewership competition because every episode of I Am Groot will be immediately available for streaming on August 10 rather than released in weekly installments. The official release time for I Am Groot on Disney+ is midnight PT/3 a.m. ET on Wednesday, August 10. This release window follows the typical Wednesday premiere time for Disney+ content but should be a much quicker watch for MCU fans compared to the platform’s other shows.
How Many Episodes Of I Am Groot There Are
The new Disney+ series I Am Groot only has five brief episodes, with the runtime of the entire series coming to approximately 15 minutes long. Unlike other MCU shows, all five episodes will be available to watch at I Am Groot’s midnight PT release time. Despite there being so few episodes in I Am Groot, Disney+ is already looking ahead to the second collection of Groot’s Guardians of the Galaxy spinoff shorts, which is being considered a second season. As of July 2022, the production of another five episodes of I Am Groot is already underway and is rumored to be premiering on Disney+ in 2023.
Is I Am Groot MCU Canon?
The status of I Am Groot being MCU canon isn’t as cut and dry as the series’ MCU TV show predecessors on Disney+. Marvel producer Brad Winderbaum explained that I Am Groot takes place between the end of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and the post-credits scene of the same movie, which depicts Teenage Groot. While Marvel has described I Am Groot as canon to MCU Phase 4, Guardians of the Galaxy writer-director James Gunn sees the show as canon unto itself, not necessarily to his live-action Guardians of the Galaxy saga.
As such, the events that are depicted in the animated I Am Groot series won’t be referenced and have no bearing on Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Despite having different views on the nature of I Am Groot as MCU canon, Gunn was reportedly consulted on the series as Kristen Lepore developed the stories and characters, and he is even included in one of the shorts. Gunn will be making a voice cameo in I Am Groot as Wrist Watch, a smartwatch that Baby Groot uses as a flashlight.
