Earlier this year, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone celebrated its 2oth anniversary with a reunion special, Return to Hogwarts. It saw several of the main cast reunite to discuss their memories of making the wildly popular movie series and showed just how close actors like Emma Watson, Rupert Grint, and Daniel Radcliffe had become. It also answered many behind-the-scenes questions audiences had never had an answer to.
However, even all these years later, Harry Potter fans have found that they still have some unanswered questions about the plot of Sorcerer’s Stone. Some of these arose years later when future installments presented odd contradictions, while other aspects of the film made no sense to audiences from day one. Fans on Reddit posed some of their biggest questions about the first Harry Potter movie and the book in hopes that someone might have some answers.
Was Dumbledore Baiting Voldemort?
When Sorcerer’s Stone was first released, audiences couldn’t help but chuckle at how easy it was for Harry, Ron, and Hermione to get past the protections guarding the Stone. Dumbledore and McGonagall had been so confident that it was safe, yet three 11-year-old children could access it without a problem.
As the series continued, however, it became clear that Dumbledore did nothing by accident. So now, Redditors like AnEndlesWaltz are asking: “did Albus bait [Voldemort] with the stone to try to thwart him?” If that were the case, Dumbledore would have purposely made the obstacles easy, except for the Mirror, which was the only proper protection. It’s possible that the combination of Harry and the Stone was just bait to get Voldemort out of hiding.
How Did Quirrell Find Voldemort?
Professor Quirrell was described as a clever man eager to prove himself. To do that, he tracked down the whereabouts of the Harry Potter villain Lord Voldemort and ended up possessed by him. But AnEndlessWaltz is confused about how Quirrell could have managed this.
“Bellatrix boasted that she looked the longest/most out of anyone,” they said. If powerful wizards like Bellatrix, her husband, and Barty Crouch Jr couldn’t find Voldemort, a young, fresh-out-of-school wizard couldn’t have either. Perhaps if Dumbledore was hoping to lure Voldemort out of hiding, he gave Quirrell a little nudge, but that would have been heartless even for him.
Why Was Hermione Afraid Of Voldemort’s Name?
When Harry first started interacting with the wizarding world in Sorcerer’s Stone, he often forgot that it was taboo to say the name Voldemort. He had been raised by Muggles, so although the Dark wizard had murdered his parents, he didn’t have a problem saying his name.
However, Hermione was also raised by Muggles, yet she was immediately afraid to say the name. “She would only know of him through books, but she wouldn’t really understand the fear of him,” said Redditor Proro. Perhaps she had just been acting to better fit in, but that doesn’t seem much like Hermione, who was typically wise in Harry Potter.
Why Would Dumbledore Use The Deluminator?
When Dumbledore appeared on Privet Drive at the beginning of Sorcerer’s Stone, he pulled out his magical Deluminator and put out all the street lights. This was done so he could avoid sneaky eyes seeing him out the window, but Redditor 3oblins was confused by this decision.
“It shot bright lights across everyone’s windows in the middle of the night,” they pointed out, wondering how Dumbledore thought that that would be less suspicious than a strangely dressed man in the street. But, ultimately, it may have just been Dumbledore’s flashiness that inspired him to use his nifty tool.
Is Gringotts Really the Only Wizarding Bank?
In the book, Harry was surprised to learn that wizards had banks, but Hagrid clarified that there is “only one.” He was referring, of course, to Gringotts Bank. However, as audiences have learned more about the wizarding world, it seems strange that there would be a single bank for everyone to use.
Redditor TheHammerIsMy asked if Hagrid had meant there was only the bank in Diagon Alley or if he had meant that “there’s just one bank company but several locations?” This could be the case, as Bill Weasley worked for Gringotts and traveled the world, but it seems there is no way to know for sure.
Why Did Scabbers Bite Goyle?
In the Philosopher’s Stone book, Malfoy, Crabbe, and Goyle introduced themselves to Harry and Ron on the train ride to Hogwarts. Once Harry had turned down Malfoy’s invitation for friendship, the bullying started, and Goyle reached to take some of their snacks for himself. However, Scabbers saved the say and bit his finger rather severely.
Of course, years later, audiences learn that Scabbers was, in fact, a Death Eater in disguise. This led Redditor TheHammerIsMy to ask if Scabbers, or Peter Pettigrew, “hates Goyle for some reason?” It could be that Scabbers feared him as the son of another Death Eater, or maybe he just didn’t want anyone to take his snacks.
How Does The School Track Students?
Before Hagrid said the famous line “Yer a wizard, Harry,” the Boy Who Lived received several hundred letters from Hogwarts. The first one had identified that Harry lived in the cupboard under the stairs, but in the book, each subsequent letter said whatever location the Dursleys had moved him to within the house.
At the time, this seemed like some charming magic, but it raised questions for Redditors like Eyl327. “Shouldn’t they be able to know when he’s not in the common room?” they asked, pointing out that if there is magic to pinpoint where a student is in a Muggle house, the magical castle should have had better tabs on its students.
How Did Hagrid Not Get Caught?
When Hagrid picks Harry up from the island shack at the beginning of Sorcerer’s Stone, he uses quite a bit of magic. First, he uses whatever kind of enchantment to access the hut. Then, he lights a fire and tries to turn Dudley into a pig. He tells Harry not to repeat all of this to anyone since he isn’t allowed to do magic. It was one of Hagrid’s best moments in Harry Potter, but it raised a few questions.
Audiences later learn that the Ministry of Magic tracks magic use, especially in Muggle areas. Redditor Eyl327 asked why the Ministry didn’t notice magic being used “illegally in front of Muggles.” It’s possible that that area was too remote for them to see, or maybe Dumbledore somehow intervened.
Why Didn’t Snape Magically Heal His Leg?
After the events of Halloween, the Golden Trio noticed that Snape had a nasty gash on his leg that led him to limp for the next couple of weeks. This made Harry think that Snape was the one trying to get the Sorcerer’s Stone since he had tried to get past Fluffy.
Of course, they later find out that Snape’s twist ending in Sorcerer’s Stone was that he was only trying to stop Quirrell, but that doesn’t answer Redditor HarryPotterCupcake‘s question: “why doesn’t Snape have Madam Pomfrey fix his leg, or fix it himself?” It is clear from later installments that Snape is capable, but maybe Fluffy’s saliva has magical properties that keep a wound from being healed.
Why Would Students Be Sent Into The Forest?
Harry’s first detention at Hogwarts resulted from sneaking out of the castle at night, and he spent it in the Forbidden Forest with Hagrid. Of course, this was when he first got a look at Voldemort himself and came very close to being killed if Firenze the centaur hadn’t intervened.
This has always perplexed audiences, who have found it strange that McGonagall would send students into a forbidden location as punishment for breaking the rules. “Surely they can be of no help to Hagrid and can only get into more danger,” said Redditor Rumblemuffin. Maybe this was yet another plan of Dumbledore’s to test the kind of person that Harry had become.
