Ju-On: The Grudge is a classic J-horror from the early 2000s, and here’s where to watch it online and if its available on Netflix, Hulu or Prime.
Here’s where to watch J-horror classic Ju-On: The Grudge online, and whether it’s on Netflix, Hulu or Amazon Prime. Ju-On: The Grudge and The Ring are the two movies that really kicked off the J-horror movie cycle, and became famous for their images of dark-haired ghost women chasing after victims. There was something potent about the basic fears The Grudge and The Ring were able to tap into, with both taking classic folklore tales and updating them for a new generation. Of course, it didn’t take long for American producers to see the value in remaking them either.
Ju-On – which was actually the third entry following two STV films – was remade in the U.S. as The Grudge. While this 2004 J-horror effort was relatively faithful to the original film’s story, with Takashi Shimizu returning as director and casting Sarah Michelle Gellar as an American carer at the center of the mystery. It also retained the film’s odd anthology format, with the narrative jumping back and forwards in time to show how the house’s curse has infected those unlucky enough to wander into it. The remake was a major success and the franchise has spawned many films, shows and video games in the years since, including 2020’s Ju-On: Origins series.
2002’s Ju-On: The Grudge is still the best of the entire series, and is the film any horror fans curious about the franchise should start with. Ju-On also contains the best scares, including the infamous bed cover shocker and the croaking Kayako descending the stairs. Despite its popularity, Ju-On: The Grudge isn’t currently streaming on platforms like Netflix, Hulu, Prime, Shudder or the other usual suspects.
Where To Watch Ju-On: The Grudge Online
However, according to JustWatch, Ju-On: The Grudge can be rented or purchased from prices starting from $3.99 on Google Play Movies, iTunes, Amazon Video, AMC on Demand, Vudu and others. Shimizu’s 2003 sequel Ju-On: The Grudge 2 can currently only be viewed on Tubi – free with adverts, but can’t be rented or purchased from any other platform.
Despite the number of J-horror parodies or ripoffs that have come in the movie’s aftermath, with the right mindset, Ju-On: The Grudge can still be an unsettling, creepy haunted house movie. There was an attempted American reboot of the series with 2020’s The Grudge remake/sidequel, which was loosely connected to the 2004 original, but while the movie did decent business it received largely poor reviews. The most recent Japanese movie was 2016’s Sadako vs. Kayako, a Freddy Vs Jason-style crossover between The Ring’s Sadako and Ju-On: The Grudge’s Kayako.
