Sly Cooper 20th Anniversary Celebrated With New Art & Merch

The beloved Sly Cooper series kicked off 20 years ago, and PlayStation is celebrating its anniversary with brand-new merchandise for fans to swipe.

September 23, 2022 marks the 20-year launch anniversary of the first Sly Cooper game, and developer Sucker Punch Productions is celebrating the franchise’s birthday with new artwork and merchandise. Across four installments the 3D platformer series has taken players around the world to plan and execute daring heists alongside a colorful collection of anthropomorphic outlaws. While no future entries in the series have been announced, the Sly Cooper 20th anniversary is a perfect opportunity to celebrate the series’ past.

Sucker Punch’s Sly Cooper titles are still considered a highlight of the PlayStation 2 catalog, with the titular raccoon remaining one of PlayStation’s most recognizable icons. Despite the PS2’s outdated graphics, the Sly Cooper series’ cartoonish art style has allowed it to stand the test of time and remain appealing to modern audiences. By taking cues from successful platformers that came before it, Sly Cooper was also able to deliver innovative gameplay with the titular character jumping, sneaking and climbing across each level with satisfying agility. 2013 saw the release of Sly Cooper 4 on PlayStation 3, though Sucker Punch was not involved in the project and it failed to revitalize the franchise.

A Sucker Punch Productions Twitter post and a PlayStation blog post have revealed new artwork and merchandise to commemorate the 20-year anniversary of Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus. The first game in the series launched on September 23, 2002, and the PlayStation blog sees various Sucker Punch developers look back on the beloved title’s development. To celebrate this occasion the entire series has been brought to PlayStation Plus Premium, and PlayStation has also revealed other exciting merchandise like a Sly plush, t-shirt and art print. Original Sly Cooper art director Dev Madan designed the shirt and the breathtaking art piece, which will both be available for purchase later this year.

PlayStation Reveals New Sly Cooper Loot For Fans To Swipe

Despite widespread rumors and continued interest from fans, Sucker Punch recently revealed that no new Sly Cooper games are currently in development. Sanzaru Games developed 2013’s Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time, taking the helm from Sucker Punch, but the announcement specifies that no studios are actively working on the franchise. This leaves the door open for another adventure with the thieving raccoon and his loyal gang down the line, but its seems likely that Sucker Punch is currently focused on delivering a sequel to the open-world samurai game Ghost of Tsushima.

With its cartoonish style and undeniable charm, Sucker Punch’s Sly Cooper series has left an unmistakable mark on the platformer genre and the PlayStation lineup. Fans were first introduced to Sly, Bentley and Murray 20 years ago, and many still hope to see the gang embark on another adventure down the line. While Sucker Punch has moved on to new ventures, Sly Cooper continues to steal the hearts of fans.
