Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed’s creativem Dead by Daylight-inspired gameplay has longtime fans filled with nostalgia and having a blast while playing as either a Ghostbuster or an antagonistic ghost such as the legendary Slimer. However, the game has also gathered quite a few complaints. With iffy gameplay that borders an unfinished multiplayer mode and buggy equipment that can ruin a match for players, it’s not difficult to see why.
Gameplay difficulties and unfair matchmaking for new players have been headaches for the game’s community. Complaints about buggy game mechanics and lack of much fun, player-friendly customization are just a couple more of Reddit‘s most unpopular opinions of Spirits Unleashed.
Halloween Masks Shouldn’t Be Temporary
Just about every modern live-service video game includes some elements for the spooky holiday that is Halloween in for the players. In celebration Spirits Unleashed added different types of creepy masks for character to don as they defeat ghosts.
The fan-favorite of them are unquestionably the pumpkin and terrifying clown masks, which will unfortunately be removed from the game this month. Defiant-Marsupial419 is saddened by the news, preaching, “They are temporary, but imo they should not be. It’s not like the game couldn’t use the extra content, and you can make way “sillier” stuff with the character creator, so “realism” isn’t a problem.”
Visibly Inconsistent Level Progression
A problem fans have begun to come forward about as time passes, level progression seems to glitch quite often in Spirits Unleashed, confusing players and making them question if their level is actually increasing with each match.
User FreedomPlzz rightfully complains about it while bringing relief, stating, “The way ghost exp is shown while you earn it is broke. You aren’t actually losing progress, it’s just correcting your exp to the level shown.” They went on to say, “I’d go from level 45 to 53 only to have it show me at 48 after a relog.”
The Game Would Be More Fun In VR
While there is a VR game like Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed set to launch in 2023 titled, Ghostbusters: Rise of the Ghost Lord, some players wonder how much more awesome Spirits Unleashed would look if it were given the same treatment.
Redditor ghostbuster_b-rye claims they, “Would love a crossplay VR title, much more of an official VR Ghostbusters game with the actual proper/original equipment.” User Gburke59 completely disagreed, swearing, “You’d throw up. There are a lot of rules to follow in making VR games, and this game would have to change a ton to make it work.” Though both have a point, one must wonder if a VR version could live up to expectations after the already buggy experience of the game.
The RTV Is Too Buggy
Speaking of bugs, the game’s Remote Trap Vehicle has been responsible for gameplay interruptions for some players, freezing their screen and causing visual distortions when placed at certain angles.
User craven42 had a lot to say about the persisting issues with the remote-controlled equipment, “My first game using it resulted in a bug where, after switching to the RTV camera, I lost my ability to input controls. He added that, “I was jostled out of it when I got slimed and was freed upon recovery, but my character was then stuck in tether mode.” Many of these issues have managed to fix themselves once specific actions are performed, like approaching a civilian.
There Aren’t Enough Customization Options
The most die-hard fans of the franchise that have played Spirits Unleashed feel there is wasted room for more customization in the game, especially on the belt of the Ghostbusters themselves, where there could be more radio equipment or other tools.
Idealistic player YOUTUBEFREEKYOYO wishes there was more to the game, “Another thing to add would be gear like Ghostbusters 2 belt stuff, the Lifegard II Alarm, some key fobs, and the option to hang your gloves off the belt would be nice…” Seeing as there aren’t even belt type and color options, these genius innovations will likely not be added to the title anytime soon.
Texture Stretching Takes Away From The Game
For a game as visually detailed as Spirits Unleashed pushed itself to be, adding Ray’s occult book collection and his quote from the movie about “judgment day”, it’s a waste that much of the text is either difficult to read or essentially illegible.
Thankfully straying from becoming something like the hollowed-out 2016 Ghostbusters game, that is considered one of the worst movie tie-in video games to date, Spirits Unleashed would have impressed fans even more with some polishing. Redditor mikeol1987 swears, “The texture stretching drives me nuts, as do the wonky tiles on each firehouse wall column.”
Playing As The Ghost Isn’t As Fun
While Spirits Unleashed isn’t a particularly scary survival horror game, playing as the Ghost can get pretty intense. Ironically, players who prefer the role often tend to feel weak and helpless, unable to do much damage before all the rifts are found.
User craven42 admits the issue, “Causes rage quits or getting called a hacker… I’m assuming the devs have something planned to make matchups more even, but this is currently my biggest gripe in the game.” Unfortunately, the range of rift spawning is easily memorized, giving Ghosts a disadvantage and a need for extra strategy. Blocking doorways, changing floors, and memorizing portal holes are the prime ways to combat this considerable unfairness.
Unfair Matchmaking For New Players
Any new player knows just how frustrating it can be while trying to learn how to play the game against foes of insanely higher levels, matchmaking keeping them from coming back for more after an evening of raging at the screen.
On top of this, some players are even experiencing bot interference. Low-level players aren’t impressed, Cristari pointing out, “The fact there is no matchmaking to speak of or balanced gameplay is quite poor. Is the game really that low in the number of players? I do see a lot of games with bots.”
Gameplay Isn’t Reliable
Spirits Unleashed definitely isn’t the best couch co-op game, its gameplay being wildly unpredictable at times. Players have complained of everything from games with no ghost or two ghosts, and Ghosts clipping through the floor in specific areas.
MrSelfDestruct88 explains they, “Only got to play Ghost twice in an hour. Also got stuck on the floor for an entire match after using the tether zip line. I’d say half the games had a lot of rubber banding and stuttering.” There has also been reports of some Ghost players binding a button to a macro to keep themselves nearly impossible to trap.
Stun Is Overpowered
Debatably the most controversial opinion in all of r/SpiritsUnleashed is that stuns are broken and unjust to Ghost players everywhere. In response, brainstorming ideas like diminishing returns in order to counter chain stuns and increasing the downtime of the PKE meter have allowed players to cope, in hope of changes being made.
FreedomPlzz argues that, “What needs to happen is resistance to stuns building up on subsequent stuns, because getting 4-man stunned is just super anti-fun and using a stun should have a large risk factor if it doesn’t work.” Others believe the radius of stun should be reduced instead, giving Ghost a greater opportunity to fight back.
