Reese Witherspoon is revealing her idea for a Big Little Lies Christmas special. The acclaimed drama series, based on Liane Moriarty’s novel of the same name, premiered on HBO back in 2017. It observes five women whose lives begin to unravel following an incident at their children’s school, and explores the animosity and personal struggles that arise as they’re entangled in a murder investigation. A second season of Big Little Lies focused on mounting speculation surrounding the “Monterey Five,” as well as an ensuing legal battle. In addition to Witherspoon, the show stars Nicole Kidman, Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz, Laura Dern, Alexander Skarsgård, and Meryl Streep.
While hope remains for a Big Little Lies season 3, Witherspoon recently shared with EW that she thinks a Christmas special would be “really fun.” Her idea for a single episode event includes reuniting the original cast and singing holiday songs at a karaoke bar, making for a more comedic concept, though she does tease that there could be another murder. Read Witherspoon’s quote regarding a potential Big Little Lies Christmas special below:
“I think it’d be really fun to do like a Big Little Lies comedy Christmas [special]. Just like a one-off episode, me and Laura Dern, let’s just go there, and then Nicole and Zoë and Shailene, we’ll go to a karaoke bar and get smashed and sing Christmas songs. I’m not gonna say we haven’t done that, because I think that was my last year’s Christmas party. [Laughs]“
A Big Little Lies Holiday Special Would Be A Perfect Series Finale
A Big Little Lies holiday special could be a fun way to wrap up the series, especially considering a season 3 might not come to fruition. With the unexpected passing of director and executive producer, Jean-Marc Vallée, a lot of the cast has expressed that as much as they would like to continue the story, it would be a difficult task. Kravitz recently discussed Big Little Lies, sharing that she could not envision making more episodes without Vallée, and Witherspoon revealed that while she and her co-stars want to reconnect, Vallée’s passing was hard on them. These latest updates came following previous optimism surrounding the series’ future.
If Witherspoon’s idea for a Big Little Lies Christmas special were to actually happen, there would certainly be a lot to enjoy. Much of the series revolved around the chaos escalating within the characters’ personal lives, including their family dynamics, and with the dysfunction of the holidays, audiences could expect Madeline and others to be more on edge. Bonnie’s past and her mother’s visions, and the relationship between Celeste and Mary Louise, are just some of the details audiences wanted to explore more, and one last episode could allow them to better understand those kinds of ideas. Over the course of its run, the Monterey Five have grown a lot closer, and so seeing them in a karaoke bar, drinking together, would not only be funny, but could end their stories on a more positive note.
Viewers last saw these characters enter the police station, ready to confess their involvement in Perry’s death, and a cliffhanger like that typically warrants additional episodes. Even if Big Little Lies does not get another season, there’s still hope that Witherspoon and the rest of the cast will reunite again in some capacity. Those interested in a potential Christmas special, or any kind of series finale, can be sure to keep an eye out for future Big Little Lies news as it is released.
